Abstract
ABSTRACT This study assessed the knowledge of maize farmers on Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) in Asa Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria. With the growing threat of climate change to agricultural productivity, understanding farmers’ awareness and adoption of CSA practices is crucial for ensuring food security and sustainability. A multistage sampling technique was used to select 140 maize farmers from seven communities from Asa Local Government Area. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. Findings revealed that the majority of farmers were male (84.9%), with an average age of 55 years and over two decades of farming experience. Most farmers obtained information about CSA through radio and fellow farmers, with limited access to formal training and digital platforms. About 58% of respondents demonstrated excellent knowledge of CSA practices, and the perceived benefits included improved soil fertility, better water management, and increased yields. However, significant challenges such as inadequate training, lack of weather data, and climate variability hinder adoption. The hypothesis test revealed a significant relationship between socio-economic characteristics and CSA knowledge. The study recommends targeted extension services, capacity building, and improved access to CSA technologies to enhance resilience among smallholder maize farmers.
