Abstract
ABSTRACT Tourism is a vital contributor to global and national economies, with sustainable practices increasingly becoming central to its development. Public transportation plays a critical role in promoting accessibility, reducing environmental impacts, and supporting inclusive economic growth. This study examines the role of public transportation in sustainable tourism development, with a specific focus on the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and Benin City Airport in Edo State. The research sought to assess how FAAN’s airport operations and transportation services contribute to tourism growth, while identifying challenges and opportunities for integrating sustainable practices. A quantitative survey research design was employed, targeting 100 respondents across key stakeholder groups, including FAAN officials, airline operators, transport providers, tourism stakeholders, and tourists. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed through descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analysis. Findings revealed a significant positive relationship between FAAN-managed public transportation services and sustainable tourism growth (r = 0.885, p < 0.05). Results further indicated that efficient airport infrastructure enhances tourist satisfaction and accessibility, while challenges such as inadequate transport integration, high costs, and poor infrastructure persist. The study concludes that aligning Edo State’s public transportation system with sustainable tourism objectives is essential for reducing carbon emissions, improving accessibility, and enhancing visitor experiences. It recommends investments in infrastructure modernization, green technologies, intermodal connectivity, and stronger stakeholder collaboration. The research contributes to the body of knowledge on sustainable tourism in Nigeria and offers practical insights for policymakers, FAAN, and tourism stakeholders seeking to improve transportation systems in support of long-term tourism development.
