Abstract
This study was carried out to examine the misuse of prepositions among secondary school students a case study of some selected schools in Eredo LCDA. The study was specifically carried out to assess the level of students’ knowledge of English prepositions, ascertain whether students level of knowledge of prepositions contribute to their misuse of prepositions, find out the extent interference of mother tongue influences the misuse of prepositions among students and determine whether English teachers’ competence influence the misuse of prepositions among the students. The survey design was adopted and the stratified random sampling technique was employed in this study. The population size comprises of students of some selected secondary schools in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State. One hundred (100) senior secondary students were used as sample of the study. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, while the hypotheses were tested using chi-square statistical tool. The study revealed the frequently misuse of prepositions in secondary schools. The study revealed that the students level of knowledge of prepositions contribute to their misuse of prepositions. Therefore, it is recommended that the teachers should encourage the students and try to change their negative attitudes in learning of prepositions.
