Abstract
Abstract This study investigates the effects of parenting styles on the emotional intelligence of students at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State. Emotional intelligence, a critical determinant of students’ academic success and interpersonal relationships, is significantly shaped by early family experiences and parental behavior. The research adopts a descriptive survey design, utilizing structured questionnaires to gather data from a representative sample of undergraduate students across various faculties. Parenting styles were categorized into authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful, while emotional intelligence was assessed through dimensions such as self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Findings reveal that students raised under authoritative parenting exhibited higher levels of emotional intelligence compared to those from authoritarian or neglectful backgrounds. The study underscores the pivotal role of nurturing and supportive parenting in fostering emotional competence among university students. Recommendations include the implementation of parental education programs and university-based emotional intelligence workshops to enhance students’ psychosocial development and academic performance.
