Youth Involvement in Criminality in Borno State: a Study of Selected Ward Under Jere Local Government Area

Abstract
This study assessed the cases of assault and theft among youths in Maiduguri Metropolitan. The objectives of the study were to identify the key factors responsible for youth involvement in crime; to investigate the patterns and recent trends of crime among youths; and to explore strategies to address youth involvement in crime in Maiduguri. Both primary and secondary sources of data were utilised in this study. The population of this study was the people of Maiduguri. The study used a total of one hundred (100) sample size. Survey method of data collection was employed using questionnaire as the instrument. The findings of the study revealed that youth criminality in Maiduguri is caused by high level of poverty. Lack of immediate punishment is also what gave chance to youth involvement in crime in Maiduguri. Further findings revealed that low parental supervision results to criminality in Maiduguri. Finally, the study among others recommended that government should create employment opportunities and empowerment opportunities for the teaming youth in the study area. Parents should be enlightened on the effects of unmet needs like starvation (food), parental care and affection, etc. on their children to enable them (parents) make adjustment.
