Abstract
Tourism is increasingly recognized as a driver of socio-economic development and a platform for promoting human rights. This study investigates The Role of Tourism in Promoting Human Rights Initiatives in Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria, examining its contributions to economic empowerment, cultural preservation, and community inclusion. A mixed-method approach was adopted, combining quantitative and qualitative strategies to obtain a comprehensive perspective.A total of 60 questionnaires were distributed to both local community members and tourists, with responses analyzed using descriptive statistics. In addition, 10 stakeholders—including tourism operators, community leaders, and cultural custodians—were interviewed to gain deeper insights. Findings indicate that tourism in Owo creates job opportunities, promotes local crafts, and fosters cultural pride, thereby supporting human rights initiatives. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, poor funding, and limited awareness of cultural sensitivity among some visitors hinder its full potential. The study identifies a literature gap in directly linking tourism development with human rights advocacy in smaller Nigerian communities. Guided by Sustainable Tourism Development Theory, Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA), and Community Participation Theory, this research emphasizes the need for inclusive tourism policies that respect cultural heritage and protect community rights. The results provide practical recommendations for policymakers, tourism operators, and local leaders to leverage tourism for social justice and sustainable growth.
