Abstract
Hunteria umbellata has many pharmacological activities and is used in the management of
several medicinal purposes. This study was conducted to better understand the antidepressant activity of Hunteria umbellata seed in mice using tail suspension model. Mice of either sex weighing 18.1-27.8 g were used for this study. Twenty mice were divided into five groups with four mice in each group. The seeds were collected, dried, powdered and then extracted using methanol in a Soxhlet apparatus to obtain the extract. Findings from this study showed increase in duration of mobility time and decrease in immobility time across the various groups, though it wasn't significantly different when compared with the control except with the standard drug, Imipramine. Conclusively, with the result from this investigation it can be inferred that the plant extract may possess some antidepressant activities.
