Issues and Problems of Auditing in Public Organizations (a Case Study of Some Selected Local Government Areas in Edo North

Abstract

Public organizations, local government inclusive are financed mainly by the
government or with internally generated funds. As non-profit oriented
organizations they are established to provide for the every growing and expanding
needs and demands of the people. Specifically, local governments' income and
eypenditure need to be monitored and controlled in order to repose the confidence
people have their activities as the third tier level of government. Auditing is
therefore a device adopted by the government to ensure accountability for prudent
management of the scarce resources of public organizations. Thus, this study is
initiated to x-ray the issues and problemns of auditing in public organizations with
some selected local governments in Edo Norih as a case study. In order to achieve
the objective of this stuáy, the survey research design is utilized and the simple
random sampling technique was utilized to get the sample size for the study. The
study elicited data using primary sources and the questionnaire was the major
instrument used to get data while secondary sources include magazines, textbooks
and articles from relevant authors. From the data which was analyzed using the
chi-square statistical tool, conclusions were drawn and adequate
recommendations made.
