Effect of Wheat Based Multigrain Powder (sabaya) on the Nutritional Status of Malnourished Albino Rats

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Northern Nigerians frequently takes wheat based multigrain powder, a traditional dietary supplement. Wheat based multigrain is made from a blend of white rice, soybeans, groundnuts, sorghum, millet, and wheat, all of which are high in macro and micronutrients. Its nutritional profile and physiological consequences are still mostly unknown, despite its cultural relevance, especially among women who are trying to gain weight during and after lactation. This study determine the effect of wheat based multigrain sabaya on the nutritional status of malnourished albino rats. For the proximate and mineral analysis, the AOAC (2020) method was used. Twelve albino rats, weighing between 80-100 grams, were used in this study. The rats were randomly divided into three groups of four animals each and fed for six weeks. The rats' weight change was monitored weekly, and a lipid profile analysis was conducted on their blood using a Lipid Profile Analysis Meter (LPM-102).With 6.76±1.074% moisture, 3.15±1.81% fiber, 10.55±2.31% ash, 26.0 ±1.78% protein, 39.7±1.82% carbohydrate and 13.88±0.66% fat, the results showed a balanced macronutrient profile that suggested it could be a high-energy food. High quantities of potassium1412±8.185mg/dl and iron 9.50±0.87mg/dl as compared WHO standard RDA of 2600 and 27mg/dl were found in the mineral analysis, suggesting that it can enhance micronutrient consumption. Weight changes results showed that the treatment groups 84.5±13.44 have moderate amount of weight changein comparison to the control group 11.5±6.46. This suggests that although wheat based multigrain powder encourages development, its energy density may need to be optimized to improve weight changeefficiency.
