Abstract
This study examined the effect of Computer-Based Instruction (CBI) on students' learning outcomes in keyboarding at Ekiti State University, with a focus on both performance and attitudinal differences. The specific objectives were to compare students' mean performance scores and attitudes before and after exposure to CBI and conventional teaching strategies. A quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test two-group design was employed, involving 200 and 300 level Business Education students purposively sampled from the university. Two instruments, the Attitude towards Keyboarding Scale (AKS) and Performance Test in Keyboarding (PTK), were used to collect data on students' attitudes and performance. The intervention spanned six weeks, with students in the experimental group taught using CBI and the control group receiving instruction via conventional methods. Findings revealed no significant differences in students’ mean performance scores or attitudes before treatment between the two groups. However, after the intervention, significant improvements were observed in the experimental group, with students exposed to CBI outperforming their counterparts in the control group in both performance scores and attitudes towards keyboarding. Analysis of data, using descriptive and inferential statistics such as t-tests, ANOVA, and ANCOVA, confirmed these differences, highlighting the effectiveness of CBI as a teaching strategy. The study concludes that CBI significantly enhances students' learning outcomes and attitudes compared to conventional methods. It recommends the integration of CBI into the curriculum, investment in technological infrastructure, and teacher training to ensure effective implementation of innovative teaching strategies. These findings underscore the potential of CBI to transform teaching and learning in higher education, particularly in technical courses such as keyboarding.
