Abstract
This research examines “The Socio-Economic Structure of the Awori People, 1999 Till Date”, focusing on how traditional economic, cultural, and social systems have evolved in response to urbanisation, industrialisation, and modernisation. The Awori, a subgroup of the Yoruba ethnic group found mainly in Lagos and Ogun States, have historically relied on farming, fishing, and trade as the foundation of their economy. However, with the rapid growth of Lagos as a commercial and industrial hub, their traditional livelihoods have undergone significant transformation.
The study explores the interplay between traditional governance, economic adaptation, and cultural continuity, highlighting how institutions such as the Obas and Baales have adjusted to new socio-political realities. Using a qualitative research approach that includes historical analysis, interviews, and field observations, the research reveals that while urbanisation has brought educational and infrastructural development, it has also led to challenges such as land displacement, unemployment, and erosion of cultural values.
Despite these pressures, the Awori people have demonstrated remarkable resilience by integrating modern practices with traditional values, thereby sustaining their cultural identity. The study concludes that promoting inclusive development, cultural preservation, and local participation is essential for ensuring the sustainable socio-economic growth of the Awori people in the face of modernisation.
