Abstract
ABSTRACT
The rapid advancement of technology has transformed the educational landscape, with online learning platforms playing a significant role in Science Education. This study investigates the adoption, effectiveness, challenges, and institutional support for online learning among students at Ekiti State University (EKSU). Using a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from a sample of Science Education students through a structured questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument was established at a coefficient of 0.81 at a significance level of 0.05.
Findings indicate a high level of adoption of online learning platforms, with students actively engaging in digital education. Many students found online platforms easy to use and beneficial for accessing course materials. However, the study revealed that unreliable internet access and lack of personal devices posed significant barriers to effective learning. Furthermore, while online learning provided flexibility and control over study pace, students reported difficulties in maintaining motivation and engagement. Institutional support, including technical assistance and instructor preparedness, was found to influence the effectiveness of online learning. Additionally, gender-related differences in engagement and performance were observed, suggesting that male and female students experience online learning differently.
The study concludes that while online learning enhances accessibility and academic performance, challenges such as poor internet infrastructure and inadequate institutional support must be addressed. It recommends that universities improve technical support, provide affordable digital resources, and train instructors in online pedagogy. Future research should explore the long-term impact of online learning on academic performance and the role of emerging technologies in enhancing digital education.
