Abstract
ABSTRACT The research work focused on the Role of Student Union Government (SUG) in the Development of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria, The Case Study of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba. To achieve this objective, four research questions were formulated in line with the objectives. A survey research design was adopted and the area of study was Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Kogi state. Data were gathered through primary and secondary data. A total of 377 copies of questionnaires were distributed to the respondents in which only three hundred and Fifty (350) copies were adequately filled and returned. The findings of the study shows that the Student Union Governments (SUGs) play a vital role in giving students a voice within the Nigerian university system. The Student Union is the only official body recognized by the university to represent the views and interests of all the students. It is through SUGs that students can make their concerns heard, whether it be about teaching standards, fees, or other matters that affect their studies. Also, the study shows that Lack of support from university management as sometimes their views are disregarded, Poor communication channels between university management and student leaders is a challenge face by the SUG in PAAU, Mismanagement of finances by student leaders is a challenge face by the SUG in PAAU and Lack of team work amongst student leaders is a challenge faced by Student Union Government (SUG) in discharging their roles in Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba. The study therefore, recommended that management should create the enabling environment for learning and peaceful co-existence. Students should note that Management can provide for their welfare and comfort based on available resources.
