Abstract
This study conducts a pragmatic analysis of the inauguration speech delivered by Governor Uba Sani, focusing on various linguistic and contextual elements that shape the speech’s effectiveness and reception. The analysis is structured around several key frameworks: context, which encompasses physical, social, and background knowledge; deixis, which examines person, place, and time references; speech act theory, which dissects the locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts present in the speech; and politeness theory, which evaluates the strategies employed to maintain social harmony and respect among interlocutors. The context section explores how the socio-political environment of the region influences the speech’s content and delivery. It highlights how background knowledge about Governor Sani’s political history and the expectations of his constituents frame their interpretation of his words. The deixis analysis identifies specific references that anchor the speech in time and space, revealing how these elements contribute to its immediacy and relevance. In examining speech act theory, this study categorizes utterances within the speech into locutionary acts (the actual words spoken), illocutionary acts (the intended meaning behind those words), and perlocutionary acts (the effects those words have on listeners). This framework allows for a deeper understanding of how Governor Sani’s rhetoric aims to persuade, motivate, or reassure his audience. Finally, politeness theory is applied to assess how Governor Sani navigates social dynamics through language. The analysis reveals strategies he employs to project authority while simultaneously fostering goodwill among diverse audience members. By integrating these theoretical perspectives, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the pragmatic dimensions of Governor Uba Sani’s inaugural address.
