Examining the Effectiveness of Social Work Programs in Reducing Juvenile Delinquency in Urban Areas in Kwara State

This study examined the Effectiveness of Social Work Programs in Reducing Juvenile Delinquency in Urban Areas in Kwara State. The dependent variable is juvenile delinquency, while the independent variable is the implementation of social work programs. The study was carried out in selected urban areas of Kwara State. A total of 410 respondents participated in the study, comprising 230 males and 180 females. The snowball sampling technique was employed to select participants. The study adopted simple percentage and chi-square for data analysis.The results revealed that social work programs implemented in urban areas of Kwara State have not been effective in significantly reducing juvenile delinquency. Findings showed a persistent rate of delinquent behavior among youths despite the presence of social intervention programs. The results further indicated that male juveniles were more involved in delinquent acts than females. Moreover, the study found that the influence of social work programs varied minimally across gender, educational background, and household income levels, suggesting a lack of targeted effectiveness.

Consequently, the study disclosed that many of the existing programs were either poorly implemented, lacked follow-up, or were not accessible to the most at-risk youths. Respondents reported low awareness of available social work services and expressed skepticism about their impact. The findings also highlighted the absence of collaboration between social workers, law enforcement, schools, and families in curbing delinquent behavior. Based on the major findings, the study recommends and concludes that the government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other relevant stakeholders should reevaluate and redesign social work programs with greater focus on implementation strategies, accessibility, and monitoring frameworks. Programs should be tailored to address the root causes of delinquency and involve community participation for greater effectiveness.
