Abstract
This study presents a comparative analysis of paints formulated from industrially sourced materials and those derived from locally available natural resources. The aim was to evaluate their physical and chemical properties, environmental impact, and suitability for various applications. Industrial paints were produced using synthetic polymers, refined pigments, and advanced additives, while locally sourced paints incorporated natural binders (e.g., rubber latex), plant-based pigments (e.g., hibiscus flower and onion peel extracts), and mineral-based fillers (e.g., periwinkle and snail shells). Physical and mechanical tests conducted included drying time, solubility, wash ability, adhesion, binding ability, chalking, and durability. The results revealed that industrial paints exhibited superior performance in terms of faster drying time (30-45 minutes), stronger adhesion, enhanced wash ability, and longer durability, making them suitable for high-demand and outdoor applications. Conversely, locally sourced paints, though less durable and slower to dry (2-3 hours), offered notable advantages such as biodegradability, low toxicity, and environmental sustainability. The findings underscore the potential of locally sourced materials in eco-friendly paint production, especially for indoor and decorative uses. The study concludes that while industrial paints remain dominant due to their performance, the integration of green chemistry principles can enhance the viability of natural paint alternatives. Recommendations were made for further research, policy support, and the development of hybrid formulations that balance performance with sustainability.
