Abstract
ABSTRACT
In this study, grizzly screens of apertures (sizes: 4 and 6 mm) for separation of shell fragments from cracked nut mixture was modified based on the existing work in order to eliminate certain limitations due to fabricating errors using existing model equations; its 3-D model presented using AutoCAD, unit parts were fabricated and performance test carried out using cracked nut mixture of determined moisture content. The results showed that the % separating efficiency of the existing grizzly screen was 87.37% compared to the modified preliminary grizzly screen separating unit of 90.15%. The whole kernel recovered and shell purity were very high. This implies that the grizzly screen separator is somewhat efficient. This implies that the modified separating unit is better than the existing one by 3.18% improvement. Therefore, the modified preliminary grizzly screens configuration should be maintained and incorporated in the fabrication of palm nut processing system; and the modified preliminary grizzly screens grizzly speed of 56.00 rpm and angle of tilt (260) should be adopted in the operation of palm nut processing system to achieve efficient separating process.
