Abstract
There is no doubt whatsoever that the advent of social media has revolutionized modern society in various aspects including the political terrain. This invention has played a great role in transforming political discourse and has led many to raise relevant philosophical questions about its impact on political participation, democratic discussions, the formation of public opinion, free speech and public deliberation. This study critically examines the influence of social media platforms on politics in general especially in Nigeria, through the lens of important philosophical concepts, such as free speech and epistemic responsibility. This study draws from Jurgen Habermas’ Public Sphere to analyse how social media promotes inclusivity, social activism and justice (citing #EndSARS movement) and rational deliberation. Additionally, the study highlights the various negative impacts of these platforms. Qualitative method of research and critical analysis were employed in carrying out the study and it concludes by acknowledging the dual nature of social media and thus makes recommendations such as media literacy campaigns, stricter content moderation policies, increased digital security, etc.
