Peer Influence, Family Background and Openness of Tertiary Institution Students to Counselling in Delta State

Study investigated that peer influence, family background and openness of tertiary institution students to counselling in Delta State University, Abraka. Three research questions and hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. This study adopted a descriptive survey research design and also this study used a multistage sampling technique and simple random sampling procedure were also used. 400 students were used as sample size. Questionnaire was used as means of instrument for data collection and the instrument was validated by the research supervisor and other two Experts in guidance and counselling Department for face validation. Crobach alpha (r) statistics was used to test the reliability of the instrument. The collected data was analyzed using mean, Chi-square and ANCOVA. The mean was used to research questions, Chi-square was used to test hypotheses 1 and 2 while ANCOVA was used to test hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The major findings of the study are: there is a significant influence of peer group on students’ openness to counselling service in Delta State University, Abraka. And there is also a significant influence of family background on students’ openness to counselling service in Delta State University, Abraka. Also, there is a significant influence of peer group and family background on students’ openness to counselling service in Delta State University, Abraka. It was recommended that students should open up to counsellors as they seek solutions to issues of life, influenced by their peers.
