Abstract

ABSTRACT
This study is an effort aimed at investigating the sleep patterns and resting behaviors of chimpanzees, crocodiles, parrots, and pythons in Gombe state university Zoo, with a focus on determining the average sleep patterns, timing, and identifying different types of rest behaviors. Over a period of time, data was collected on the animals' sleep patterns, including duration, and timing of sleep periods. Additionally, various types of rest behaviors, such as sitting, lying, standing, were recorded. The study employed mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data collection with qualitative observations. The results showed distinct sleep patterns and rest behaviors among the species, with significant variations in sleep duration, timing, and rest behavior types. Chimpanzees exhibited a monophasic sleep pattern, while crocodiles showed a crepuscular sleep pattern. Parrots displayed a diurnal sleep pattern, and pythons exhibited a nocturnal sleep pattern. The study's findings provide valuable insights into the sleep and rest behaviors of these animals, informing animal care and welfare practices in animal parks. The results also highlight the importance of providing species-specific environments that cater to their unique sleep and resting needs.
