Abstract
This study examines language use on social media in the context of Nigerian politics, with a specific focus on the platform X (formerly Twitter). Adopting a sociolinguistic approach, the research explores how language serves as a tool for political expression, identity construction, and ideological dissemination. Data for the study was collected through purposive sampling of political posts, comments, and hashtags related to recent Nigerian political discourse, including election campaigns and governance debates. The analysis reveals the prominent use of code-switching between English, Pidgin, and indigenous Nigerian languages, reflecting users’ linguistic creativity and cultural affiliations. Language on X is often characterized by the use of metaphor, satire, and internet slang, serving to critique political figures, mobilize supporters, and shape public opinion. Additionally, the study identifies the role of hashtags and trending topics in fostering virtual communities and amplifying political movements. Findings highlight the intersection of language, power, and digital media, demonstrating how social media has transformed political engagement in Nigeria. The study underscores the dynamic nature of language as a means of resistance, solidarity, and negotiation in the digital age, offering valuable insights into the evolving relationship between sociolinguistics and political discourse in a globalized context
