Knowledge and Prevention Strategies of Anaemia Among Pregnant Women Attending Antenantal Clinic in Selected Health Centres, Ekpoma, edo state

Abstract

A condition in which the blood doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells. Anaemla results
rom a lack of red blood cells or dysfiunctional red blood cells in the body. This leads to reduced
axygen flow to the body's vital organs. This study was aimed at evaluating the kowledge and
prevention straregies of anaemia among pregnant women allending antenaial clinic in selected
health centres Ekpoma, Edo State. The descriptive survey research method was used. Sirzty four
[64) pregnant women in health centres. Elpoma were randomly selected and grouped to form
the sample size for this investigation. The instrument used for dasa collection was the self.
tructured questionnaire using the options YES or NO and it was analyzed uring frequency and
percentage. The result showed that the pregnant women are knowledgeable about the anaemia,
majority (86 percent) of the respondents know the cause of anemia. Majority of the respondents
elso know that anaemia is caused as a results of faulty absorption mechanism (85 perceng),
nfection: chronic malaria, tuberculosis (88 percen), excess demand of iron: pregnancy is an
Iron deficit state (92 percent). Based on the prevention strategies of anaemia among pregnant
Svomen showed that majority,(56 percent) of the respondents affirmed that frequency of intake
of balanced meal can prevent anaemia in pregnanoy, use of insecticide trealed net can preven
anaemia in pregnancy,(85 percend), freguency of taken foods rich in dietary iron, for ecample,
Hiver, snail, orange, and vegetables can prevent anaemia in pregnancy (58 percent), boiling of
Nvater before drink can prevent anaemia in pregnancy (70 percend), putting what one have
Hearmt at the clinic into practice can prevent anaemia in pregnancy (36 percent), culture and
belief affect the prevention of anaemia (80 perceno). Therefore. long term policies by
Bovermmenu, non-government agencies and the community can be directed to formulaie
efecnive plars like enudicuning anenia in children and adolescent girls. Pregnant women wirh
anaemic condiriom are advice to take more nutritional diet especially iron and folic acid
