Perceived Effect of Livestock Management Practices on Cattle Production Among Cattle Farmers in Kwara State, Nigeria

Cattle production remains a critical component of Nigeria’s agricultural economy, providing food,
income, and employment for rural households. However, the productivity of cattle farmers is
significantly influenced by their livestock management practices. This study examined the perceived
effect of livestock management practices on cattle production among cattle farmers in Kwara State,
Nigeria, with the goal of identifying knowledge gaps, utilization patterns, and barriers to effective
management. A multi-stage sampling procedure Was used to select 146 respondents across three local
government areas. Data were collected through structured interview schedule and analyzed using
descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that most farmers had a good understanding
of core practices such as feed formulation (98.6%) and vaccination (78.8%), but showed lower
awareness in areas such as ventilation and manure management. Feed supply, record keeping, and
handling were the most practiced methods, with 93.2% of farmers affirming improved productivity
through record keeping. Significant challenges affecting practice adoption included lack of knowledge
(84.9%), poor transport systems (76%), and insufficient farm labor (73.3%). Statistical analysis showed
a significant relationship between farmers’ socio-economic characteristics such as age, farming
experience, primary occupation and their perception of management practice effectiveness (p < 0.05).
The study concluded that improved farmer education, training, infrastructure, and access to resources
are essential for enhancing cattle production. The study thus recommends the promotion of modern
livestock practices, increased funding, stronger extension services, and cooperative structures to address
prevailing constraints and support sustainable livestock development in Nigeria
