Abstract
This study examines the knowledge and attitudes of nursing mothers’ towards neonatal vaccination at State Specialist Hospital, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. The purpose was to determine mothers’’ knowledge, attitudes and compliance with immunization schedule. The descriptive cross sectional design was adopted. Using a convenience sampling method, 150 respondents were surveyed. Most participants (88.6%) were Yoruba. Key findings include: 86% viewed childhood vaccination as necessary, 76.6% supported routine birth vaccination, but 78.6% believed local herbs were superior. Knowledge correlated positively with compliance. Concerns over side effects and misconceptions varied, but religion did not hinder vaccination (83% approval). Factors affecting compliance included health workers' behavior, cost, and wait times. Maternal education significantly influenced practices. However, there is no significant relationship between mothers’’ age and parity in compliance with immunization schedule. Recommendations include enhancing education, reducing healthcare barriers, and involving community leaders in vaccination efforts. Future research should explore government policy impacts and interventions for improving vaccination schedule completion.
