Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to evaluate the growth performance and reproductive indices of F1 progenies of Oreochromis niloticus containing foreign piscine DNA. The F1 progeny fingerlings of Oreochromis niloticus weighted (13.53 –90.20g) and length (4.7−7.4cm) were obtained from O. niloticus injected with various concentrations; 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 µg/µl of Lates niloticus DNA, collected from the 2021 NRF project. The fish were reared for the period of 90 days on 32% crude protein diet. The result shows better final weight and weight gain (511.28±10.97 and 434.58±13.14, respectively) in F1 progenies of O. niloticus parents injected with 40µg/µl Lates niloticus DNA. Similarly, best fecundity and number of eggs (11.59±1.13 and 189.33±74.50, respectively) were recorded in F1 progenies of O. niloticus parents injected with 40µg/µl Lates niloticus DNA. However, the GSI (1.53±0.39) were observed in F1 progenies of O. niloticus parents injected with 10µg/µl DNA. Conclusively, Lates niloticus DNA has the potentials of improving growth and reproductive performance in F1 progenies of Oreochromis niloticus.
