Abstract
This study was carried out to determine the histology of organs of histology of selected organs of broiler chickens fed diet containing Thaumatococcus danielli leaves and root powder as additives. Thaumatococcus danielli leaf and root were harvested, washed with brine resolution and then oven dried and then made separately to obtain Thaumatococcus danielli leaf powder (TDLP) and Thaumatococcus danielli root powder (TDRP). Six diets were formulated such that diet 1 is negative control (no additive added), diet 2 is positive control (positive control) had a commercial antibiotics growth promoter included at manufacturer recommended level, diet 3 contained the TDLP at 2g/kg, diet 4 contained the TDLP at 4g/kg, diet 5 contained the TDRP at 2g/kg, and diet 6 contained the TDRP at 4g/kg. A total of 240 one week old broiler chickens were assigned into 6 dietary groups, with 4 replicate each and each replicate consisted of 10 birds based on weight equalization basis. The birds were fed the starter diet from 1 – 4 weeks and a finisher diet from above 4 – 8 weeks. On the 56th day, a bird whose weight was close to the group mean was selected from each replicate and fasted for 12 hours after which was slaughtered through neck dislocation and decapitation and then eviscerated. Samples of liver and kidney were taken into plain sample bottles preserved with formalin and taken to the laboratory for analysis of histological changes.
Data obtained was subjected to a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) in a completely randomized designed SPSS package version 27. Results show that the liver of birds fed the negative control, positive control and those fed diet containing 2g TDLP/kg has moderate distention of the sinusoid while the liver of those fed diet containing 4g TDLP and 2g TDRP showed low observable lesion. For kidney inclusion, dietary at 2g/kg root, at 4g/kg leaves and at 4g/kg root have no effect. The negative control, antibiotics and at 2g/kg root has an effect.
