Abstract
This work examined a history of Ilogbo-Eremi in Olorunda Local Council Development Area of Lagos State up to 2022. It maintained that the emergence of Ilogbo-Eremi could be traced to Ile-Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba race. According to tradition, two brothers who were descendants of Oduduwa left Ile-Ife in response to the leading of the Oracle to found their different settlements. They got to a place called Awo-Ile where the two of them decided to go their separate ways. While at Ile-Ife, they took some items along with them among which were deities. One of the deities was made of both male and female, the elder brother who had the male deity with him, journeyed and settled at a place called Ilogbo-Asolo. His younger brother on the other hand, who had the female deity continued until he got to a place where he settled. At this place, he inquired from the Oracle his decision to settle down there, and the outcome was positive. A line of Odu Ifa came out as follow: ‘Ilu agbo, Ilu ato, Ilu aye yin, Iluyi a mu ere wa fun mi’, meaning: ‘this land would grow old, the land would yield its increase, the land would favour you, the land would yield its goodies for me’. It was from this phrase that the name Ilogbo-Eremi was coined. The objectives of this research were to: examine the land and the people of Ilogbo-Eremi in Olorunda Local Council Development Area of Lagos State; discuss the traditions of origin of Ilogbo-Eremi; analyze the traditional political, economic and social systems of the people of Ilogbo-Eremi; and examine the changes that had occurred in Ilogbo-Eremi over the years. This work was divided into four main chapters. Chapter one gave a background to the study while chapter two focused on the traditions of origin. Chapter three examined the economic, social and political developments in Ilogbo-Eremi. Lastly, chapter four, provided summary and conclusion to this research. This research used history method which comprised both primary and secondary sources of information. The primary sources included field trip to the research area; oral interviews were conducted with relevant people on the research topic in order to maintain a degree of objectivity. The secondary sources, on the other hand, involved published materials, long essays, journals articles, dictionaries, among others. All these were carefully used to achieve the objectives of this research. Lastly, this study maintained that though there had been various developments in Ilogbo-Eremi since its emergence, the people of the town had not totally swept away their traditional values and customs which formed their peculiarities despite the influences of westernization and globalization with other communities.
