Abstract
This study evaluated the role of Public Relations (PR) in enhancing governance, public awareness, and mutual understanding at the Ilesa West Local Government Area (LGA) of Osun State, Nigeria. Using the Excellence Theory as a framework, the study adopted a survey research design. A sample of 150 residents of Ilesa West LGA was drawn using simple random sampling, and data were collected via a structured questionnaire. Findings revealed that the LGA primarily utilizes one-way communication tools, such as posters, town announcers, and occasional press releases, rather than strategic two-way models. While a majority of respondents (72%) were aware of the LGA's existence, their knowledge of specific government policies and development projects remained low (45%). The study established a statistically significant, positive correlation between the frequency of PR activities and citizens' perception of government transparency. The study concluded that the current PR practice in Ilesa West LGA is largely ceremonial and informational, rather than strategic and relationship-focused. It recommends that the LGA establish a dedicated, professionally-staffed PR unit, integrate digital media for interactive citizen engagement, and prioritize two-way communication to foster mutual understanding and rebuild public trust.
