Abstract
This study investigates the issues of pronunciation and spelling in English language
among junior secondary school students in Dutsin-Ma municipal, Katsina State. The
research employs a descriptive survey design to systematically assess the prevalence
and causes of these linguistic challenges. The population comprises junior secondary
students from five schools in Dutsin-Ma, with a total population of 8,123 students. A
simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 370 students
from three schools, ensuring a representative cross-section of the student body. Data
was collected using a 12-item open-ended questionnaire on a 4-point Likert scale,
designed to gauge students' perceptions and experiences with pronunciation and spelling
in English. The instrument's validity was confirmed by experts in test and measurement
from the Faculty of Education at Federal University Dutsin-Ma. Data collection
involved direct engagement with the students, ensuring a relaxed environment for
accurate responses. The analysis of data was conducted using frequencies and
percentages, with findings presented in tabular form to facilitate interpretation. The
results provide insights into the extent of pronunciation and spelling difficulties among
the students, offering valuable information for educators and policymakers to address
these challenges at an early stage of language development.
