Investigation Into the Factors Affecting the Learning of Reading and Writing Skills in English Language Among Students With Learning Disabilities in Secondary Schools in Ikwo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.

Abstract
Students with learning disabilities face a myriad of challenges in learning English as a second language. This study investigated the factors affecting the learning of the reading and writing skills in English language in secondary schools in Ikwo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.The descriptive research design used aided in systematically gathering and analyzing data to provide a detailed portrait of the factors influencing the learning of reading and writing skills among students with learning disabilities in Ikwo Local Government Area.The study also examined learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dysorthographia, dysgraphia as well as Three research questions and three objectives guided the study. A simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of Two hundred and twenty (220) respondents. A Structured questionnaire was adopted as primary instruments for collecting data and the data collected through the questionnaire was analysed through statistical mean. The study found that there is inadequate access to specialized instructional materials, assistive technology, or tailored teaching methods. The results show that though teachers have positive attitude towards students with learning disabilities, they however lack knowledge about effective teaching strategies that could address this learners’ needs and could be useful to individual learners while teaching English language. The researchers recommended among other things, that school administrators should prioritize the procurement and availability of specialized instructional materials and resources that cater to the diverse needs of students with learning disabilities. This includes textbooks, audiobooks, and graphic organizers tailored to the needs of every learner that facilitate understanding of the English language and the reading and writing skills associated with the language.
