Factors Affecting Students' Performance in Teaching and Learning of English Language in Some Selected Secondary Schools in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State

Abstract

This research work was carried out on the factors affecting students performance in the teaching and
learning of English language in some selected schools in Ondo West Local Government Area. A
descriptive survey research approach was adopted for this study. Simple random sampling technique was
used in selecting one hundred secondary schools students from five (5) selected secondary schools in
Ondo West Local Government Area. The research instrument was used for carrying out the research
work was a questionnaire which was designed using 4-Likert Scale response options of Strongly Agreed
(SA), Agreed (A), Disagreed (D) and Strongly Disagreed (SD). The statistical analysis was done using
frequency counts and mean (X). Findings revealed that academic performance of secondary school
students are predetermined by some major factors - competence of the teacher, availability of
textbooks, the students willingness to learning and so on. It was recommended that students should
create interest in understanding English language, standard textbooks should be made available for
students in school and at home to improve performance in English language and that government and
school owners should ensure moderate number of students are in the class. This will lead to an
improvement in the academic performance of secondary school students.
