Abstract
ABSTRACT
Abelmoschus esculentus (okra) fruit is a vegetable that has been reported to contain compounds such as flavonoids and vitamin C that exhibit antioxidant properties. This study investigated the effect of Abelmoschus esculentus fruit infusion on superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, glutathione (GSH) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations of albino rat. Thirty albino rats were used for this study and were divided into five groups of six rats each. The groups were labeled A to E. Group A served as control, as group B, C, D and E were treatment groups and administered 125, 250, 375 and 500 mg/kg body weight of the extract for 21 days. After the period of administration, the animals were fasted overnight, sacrificed and blood was collected and used for statistical analysis. The result showed that there was a dose-dependent increase in SOD activity and GSH concentration while there was a dose-dependent reduction in MDA concentration. The observed increase in SOD activity and GSH concentration for the groups treated with 250 - 500 mg/kg b.w of the extract was significant (p
