Abstract
Afrobeat, a musical genre originating in Nigeria in the late 1960s, was created by Fela Kuti and other musicians. This genre blends various styles, including West African music (Highlife, Fuji), American jazz and funk, Nigerian traditional music (Yoruba rhythms, chants), and political messaging. Afrobeat serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium for political expression and resistance. Initially formed to challenge Nigeria's oppressive military regime, it remains a tool for social commentary and change. Fela Kuti, a pivotal figure in Nigerian history, was more than a musician; he was a political activist, social critic, and cultural icon. Growing up in a family of activists and musicians, Fela's worldview and musical style were shaped by these influences. He used his music to protest against the Nigerian government's policies, establishing himself as one of the most influential African musicians of the 20th century. His mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a notable activist, significantly impacted his shift towards Afrobeat, reinforcing his African musical identity. Fela's influence on Nigerian youths spans politics, culture, economics, and religion. Politically, his activism and establishment of the "Movement of the People" party, along with his criticisms of military rule and promotion of political mobilization, inspired a generation of activists. Culturally, Fela's embrace of African identity and resistance to cultural imperialism revived pride in Nigerian heritage. His music critiqued economic exploitation and advocated for African empowerment. Despite his skepticism towards organized religion, Fela's views challenged religious exploitation and promoted social justice. Afrobeat legacy endures, influencing contemporary Nigerian artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Fireboy DML, who continue to promote the genre globally. Burna Boy, in particular, reflects Fela's political views and commitment to social justice in his music, highlighting Afrobeat ongoing impact.
