Abstract
This project addresses the concerning decline in academic performance within the Mechanical Engineering department at the University of Cross River State. Applying the Lean Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) methodology, the study employed a mixed-methods approach to identify root causes. Data collection included student academic records and surveys from students and lecturers.
The analysis revealed that key factors hindering performance were lecturer effectiveness, inadequate access to technology and practical equipment, academic pressure, and weak lecturer-student relationships. In the Improve phase, targeted interventions were implemented, including faculty development sessions, piloted interactive teaching methods, and improved access to resources. A structured control plan with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) was established to sustain these gains.
The study concludes that the DMAIC framework is highly effective for diagnosing and addressing complex issues in an educational setting. It provides a replicable, data-driven model for continuous academic improvement, leading to enhanced student outcomes, and recommends the institutionalization of these practices for long-term success.
