Abstract
This research examines the historical background and cultural significance of the Ìjàkadì Festival in Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria. The festival, which dates back to the 14th century, originated from a legendary wrestling contest between two brothers and has since evolved into a major annual celebration symbolizing unity, strength, and leadership within the Offa community. The study explores the origins, development, symbolism, and impact of the festival on the socio-cultural and economic life of the people of Offa. The objectives of the research include investigating the cultural meanings attached to Ìjàkadì, examining community participation, assessing its contribution to the development of Offa, and identifying challenges affecting its continuity. The research adopts the historical method, relying on both primary sources such as oral interviews with elders and eyewitnesses, and secondary sources such as books, journals, and articles for data collection. Findings reveal that the Ìjàkadì Festival remains a vital element of Offa’s cultural identity, serving as a tool for social cohesion, moral education, and tourism promotion. However, challenges such as poor documentation, religious influence, modernization, and declining youth participation threaten its sustainability. The study therefore recommends improved documentation, government and community support, active youth engagement, and the integration of the festival into educational curricula to ensure its preservation and continued relevance. Ultimately, the research underscores that the Ìjàkadì Festival is not merely a traditional celebration but a living heritage that connects the past, present, and future of the Offa people.
