Abstract
The study investigates the influence of field trips on the teaching and learning of biology in secondary schools within Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State. Employing a descriptive survey design, the research aimed to describe the impact of field trips on students’ academic performance and learning experiences. The study’s population comprised 471 SS2 biology students from 12 public secondary schools, including both urban and rural institutions. A sample of 120 students was selected using multistage random sampling.Data were collected through a self-structured questionnaire, the “Influence of Field Trip in Secondary School Scale” (IFTSSS), which was validated by experts and had a reliability coefficient of 0.92. The collected data were analyzed using mean and Standard Deviation. The decision rule followed was that a mean score of 2.5 and above was considered as accepted, while scores below 2.5 were regarded as rejected. The study concluded that Integrating diverse types of field trips into the biology curriculum is essential for improving academic performance, fostering a deeper understanding of biology, and developing broader skills such as cultural appreciation, problem-solving, and career readiness. Recommendations were made for educators and policymakers to consider these findings in curriculum development and further research was suggested to explore more targeted pedagogical strategies and the long-term impacts of field trips on student learning and career trajectories.
