Assessment of Health Care Waste Management Practices Among Health Workers in Esan West Local Government Area, Edo State

Abstract
Medical waste management is of crucial importance in health care facilities. The present study carried out an assessment of health care waste management practices among health workers in Esan West Local Government Area, Edo State. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in selected Health care centres in Esan West, Edo state among 284 HCWs. Data was collected using self-report questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that knowledge of medical waste management was high, majority 98.2% acknowledged that any discarded biological products such as tissues and blood from wards and laboratories can be regarded as medical waste, 98.2% of the respondents dispose sharps in sharps specific puncture proof containers and 78.2% apply universal precaution while handling/disposing clinical wastes. The study demonstrated adequate knowledge and good practice towards medical waste management. Therefore, there should be continuous monitoring and evaluation of medical waste disposal control measures practices for further improvement
