Factors Affecting the Effective Teaching of Biology in Secondary Schools in ekiti state

ABSTRACT This study investigated the factors affecting the effective Teaching of* Biology in secondary schools in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of class size on teacher effectiveness, determine the influence of teachers' gender on teachers' effectiveness, investigate the influence of resources available on teachers' effectiveness. A descriptive research design of the survey type was used for the study. The study comprised 927 students learning Biology in all the Public senior secondary schools in Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area Ekiti State. The sample for the study comprised 100 students in Senior Secondary schools in Ado LGA. A self-structured Influence of Class Size on Teachers' Effectiveness inTeaching Biology (ICSTETB)questionnaire was used for this study. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and the Analysis of Covariance. The results revealed that level of teachers' effectiveness in Biology secondary schools is high.Also, there is no significant relationship of teachers' gender on teachers' effectiveness, The study also revealed that there is no significant relationship of class resources on teachers' effectiveness. There is no significant relationship of class size on teachers' effectiveness. The study recommended that; Adopt Smaller Class Sizes for Effective Teaching, including proper handling of chemicals; Recruit More Qualified Biology Teachers, Provide Training for Effective Classroom Management;Integrate Technology to Supplement Teaching.
