Construction activities generate substantial amounts of solid waste, contributing to environmental degradation and inefficient resource utilization. This study evaluates solid waste disposal practices on construction sites, identifies challenges, and proposes strategies for improvement. A convergent parallel mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining quantitative data from 100 distributed questionnaires (with a 65% response rate) and qualitative insights from 20 semi-structured interviews with construction professionals in Uromi.
The findings indicate that wood, concrete, and cement bags are the most common waste materials. Predominant disposal methods include landfilling, burning, and limited recycling, reflecting inadequate waste management structures. Key challenges identified include poor waste segregation, high disposal costs, weak enforcement policies, and low awareness among workers. Environmental impacts such as land and water pollution, air contamination, and public health risks were also highlighted.
To address these issues, the study recommends strict enforcement of regulations, incentives for recycling, worker training programs, and investment in local recycling facilities. Promoting waste segregation, prefabrication, and sustainable disposal methods can significantly enhance construction waste management. Collaborative efforts among government bodies, industry professionals, and contractors are essential to fostering a more sustainable construction sector.
This research provides valuable insights into construction waste management, emphasizing the need for policy reform, industry awareness, and the adoption of sustainable disposal practices to minimize environmental and economic impacts.
