Abstract
The evaluation of the antioxidant potential of the methanolic leaf extract of Brachiara eruciformis was carried out. Methanolic leaf extract of Brachiara eruciformis was also screened for phytochemical constituents. The phytochemicals analysis and the antioxidant activity was carried out using standard methods. The results for the antioxidant activity shows that the extract has a significant amount of phenolics and possess a high antioxidant potential. The antioxidant values for the extract was dose-dependent. The qualitative phytochemical analysis result of the methanolic extract of Brachiara eruciformis show the presence of saponins, steroids, phlobatannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, glycoside and phenol in the extract. The quantitative phytochemical composition result of the methanolic extract of Brachiara eruciformis show that the phytochemicals present were found to be of a good composition where Phenol was found to be most abundant in the plant extracts with values of 109.6 mg/100g. Saponin, Steroids and Phlobatannins showed moderate amount with values of 35.80 % for saponin, 21.98 mg/100 g for steroids, 13.98 % for alkaloids while glycosides and flavonoids were in minimal amount with values of 8.75 mg/100g for glycosides, and 3.45 % for flavonoids respectively. The result obtained showed an appreciable number and amount of phytochemicals present in the extract, which could be attributed to its antioxidant activity.
