Niger Delta Crisis and Its Impact on Nigera National Security (a Case Study of Okuama–ewu Ughelli, Delta State)

This study examines the Niger Delta crisis: its impact on Nigeria nation security. The objective
of the study is to determine whether Niger Delta crisis affects Nigerian National Security. The
study adopted the qualitative method of data collection whereby relevant data were collected
from both primary and secondary source. The questionnaire was the main instrument used in
collecting data from the respondents while the secondary data collected for this study was from
Journals, existing literature and internet source. The data collected were analyzed by use of
simple percentages while chi-square (X2) was used to test the hypothesis formulated for validity.
The finding revealed that Niger Delta crisis affects Nigerian National security. From the
findings, the study concludes that abysmal failure of successive administrations in Nigeria to
address Niger Delta crisis such as poverty, unemployment and inequitable distribution of wealth
among ethnic nationalities, ultimately resulted to anger, agitation and violent crimes against the
Nigerian state by some individuals and groups. The study recommends that governments at all
levels should ensure that rising poverty indices are reversed and a realistic social security
programme is pursued and systematically implemented to ensure that the populace meets their
basic needs.
