Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study research titled The effect of child street hawking on the educational development of children in the Naibawa area of Kumbotso Local Government, Kano State. The study was motivated by the increasing number of children engaged in hawking activities during school hours which poses a significant concern for their academic performance and future opportunities. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 100 children below the age of 17 who engage in hawking, out of which 78 valid responses were analyzed. Additionally, in-depth interviews with parents and guardians were conducted to provide qualitative insights, though participation was limited. The findings revealed that street hawking negatively affects children's school attendance, concentration, academic performance, and overall educational development. Factors such as poverty, parental unemployment, and lack of awareness were identified as key drivers of the practice. The study concludes that child street hawking undermines educational attainment and recommends increased government intervention, public awareness campaigns, and support for families to reduce child involvement in street trading and promote education in the area.
