Electronic Transmission of Results and Its Implications on the Nigeria 2023 Election

This study examines the introduction and implementation of electronic transmission of election results and its implications for the 2023 general elections in Nigeria. The reform, championed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), sought to enhance the credibility, transparency, and efficiency of the electoral process through digital innovation. The study employed a descriptive survey design, gathering data from a cross-section of voters, electoral officials, party agents, and civil society observers across selected states in Nigeria. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires and interviews, while secondary data were obtained from INEC reports, academic publications, and media analyses. Findings revealed that the electronic transmission of results significantly improved transparency, reduced opportunities for manual manipulation, and strengthened public confidence in the electoral process in many areas. However, challenges such as poor internet connectivity, technical glitches, logistical delays, and political resistance undermined its full effectiveness in some regions. The study concludes that while electronic transmission represents a positive step toward electoral modernization in Nigeria, its success depends on robust digital infrastructure, adequate training of election personnel, and strict adherence to legal and procedural frameworks. The study recommends that INEC and the Federal Government invest in nationwide digital connectivity, continuous voter education, and policy reforms to institutionalize electronic result transmission as a permanent feature of Nigeria’s electoral system.
