Economic Analysis of Cowpea Production in Kabo Lga of Kano State

ABSTRACT
The study was conducted to Analyze the Economic of Cowpea production in Kabo Local Government, Kano state. A multistage sampling technique was used to select 144 Cowpea producers. Descriptive statistics, Gross margin analysis and Multiple regression analysis were used to achieved the research objectives. The result indicated that majority of the Cowpea producers are male, they are at their youth age and farm sizes are relatively small, less than 1hectre. The result shows that the farmers have one form of Education or the other with 76.4% of them being married. The result for Gross margin analysis shows that Cowpea production is profitable with Gross margin of ₦49,007.87 and return on investment (ROI) of ₦1.22 per hectare respectively. The multiple regression analysis shows that the Size of farm and fertilizer are positive and statistically significant at 10% probability level where as labor is positive and statistically significance at 1% probability level. However, the F value is 125.570 and also statistically significant at 1% probability level. The major constraints associated with Cowpea production in the area are Pest and diseases, Post harvest loss and Lack of improved seed varieties.The study concluded that Cowpea production in the area is profitable but also recommended that Extension services should be enhanced, Formation of strong cooperative organization among Cowpea farmers, Improved seed varieties should be provided and Silos and other grain storage facilities should be made available to the farmers in order to improve and boost Cowpea production in the area.
