Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common global health concerns with a rapidly increasing
incidence. Several preclinical studies suggest the potential of edible plants in controlling blood
sugar levels and stabilizing diet. The goals of the study were to assess the modulation of glucose
transporter 4 and tumor necrotic factor alpha genes by Taraxacum officinale in the liver of
treptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Thirty-six male albino rats (150-200 g, were used. The rats
were grouped into seven groups (n=6). Group I normal rats; group II, STZ-diabetic ntreated rats,
Group III -V were diabetic rats + 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg saponins from T. officinale, group VI were
diabetic rats + 100 mg/kg of Taraxacum offcinale leave extract while group VIl were diabetic rats
administered metformin (100 mg/kg). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the amplification of
GLUT4 and TNF-alpha gene was carried out. STZ-untreated group shows a significant (p
