Abstract
ABSTRACT
Construction waste generation is a significant problem in the construction industry, and it has severe environmental, economic, and social impacts. Kano, Nigeria is one of the cities experiencing rapid urbanization and construction activities, leading to increased construction waste generation. This study aims to identify the causes of construction waste generation on project sites in Kano, Nigeria.Construction waste generation is a complex issue that involves various factors, including technical, economic, social, and environmental factors. Previous studies have identified several causes of construction waste generation, including lack of proper planning and design, inadequate site management, inexperienced workers, overordering of materials, damage to materials during transportation, lack of storage facilities, poor quality materials, changes in project scope or design, lack of waste management plan, and cultural and behavioral factors.This study used a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. A survey of 5 construction project sites in Kano was conducted, and 30 in-depth with construction professionals were held. The survey questionnaire was designed to collect data on the causes of construction waste generation, while the interviews were used to gather more detailed information on the factors that contribute to waste generation.The study found that the main causes of construction waste generation on project sites in Kano include: Lack of proper planning and design, Inadequate site management, Inexperienced workers, Overordering of materials, Damage to materials during transportation, Lack of storage facilities,Poor quality materials, Changes in project scope or design, Lack of waste management plan, Cultural and behavioral factors
