Occupational Safety Practices Among Automobiles Mechanics in Gombe Metropolis

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: The automobile mechanics are exposed to a variety of occupational hazards. These hazards pose risk to their health and can result in major illnesses. Workers’ safety and protection at informal sector garages is of public health concern. This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge and occupational safety practices among automobile mechanics in Gombe metropolis.
Materials and Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an interviewer-administered questionnaire for 327 automobile mechanics within Gombe metropolis who were selected using cluster-sampling technique. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS Version 23 statistical Computer software package.
Results: Majority (79%) of the respondents have good knowledge of occupational hazards. A larger percentage (69%) have poor safety practices. Increasing age, years of experience and higher level of education were found to be associated with good knowledge and safety practices.
Conclusion: Overall, the study found high level of knowledge of occupational hazards among the respondents, however, majority of the respondents have poor safety practice. Reasons for that were majorly attributed to unavailability and unaffordability of PPE.
