Adsorption of Cd(ii) Using Activated Carbon Prepared from Mango Seed Coats

Abstract
This study investigates the use of activated carbon derived from mango (Mangifera indica) seed coats for the removal of cadmium (Cd²⁺) from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were carried out to examine the effects of varying initial metal concentrations (10–50 ppm) and adsorbent dosages (0.1–0.5 g) at a constant pH of 5. Residual cadmium levels were measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS).
Results showed that adsorption efficiency increased with higher initial concentrations, reaching 80.78% removal at 50 ppm with 0.5 g of adsorbent. In contrast, increasing the adsorbent dosage above 0.1 g at a constant 50 ppm showed minimal improvement, suggesting early site saturation. The activated carbon demonstrated strong affinity for cadmium, highlighting its potential as a low-cost, eco-friendly adsorbent.
Overall, mango seed coat-based activated carbon shows promise for effective cadmium
removal in water treatment.
