Knowledge and Attitude Toward the Control of Sickle Cell Among University Students in Ekiti State

This study investigated the knowledge and attitudes of undergraduate students toward the control and management of sickle cell. The purpose of the study was to assess their awareness of the genetic basis, prevention strategies, and available treatments for sickle cell, alongside their perceptions and attitudes toward the control of the condition. The survey design of the descriptive type of research was used for this study. The population of the study consisted all undergraduate students Ekiti State University Ado Ekiti, Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology Ikere- Ekiti, Federal University Oye Ekiti.
The sample size of four hundred (400) respondents were used for this study. The purposive sampling technique was used to select only public universities in the state. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 400 undergraduates from various universities using self-structured questionnaires. The instrument for data collection for this study was a questionnaire. The split half method of reliability was used to ascertain the reliability of the instrument using Cronbach's Alpha in conjunction with Spearman Brown's formula. The reliability index obtained was 0.88. The study revealed varying levels of knowledge about sickle cell, with a majority of participants aware of its genetic nature but fewer understanding its inheritance patterns or the importance of genetic counseling. Attitudes toward the control of sickle cell were generally positive. The findings highlight the need for targeted educational campaigns within universities to improve understanding of sickle cell, reduce stigma, and promote proactive measures such as premarital screening and genetic counseling. Enhanced awareness among this demographic can contribute to better control of sickle cell and foster an inclusive environment for affected individuals.
