Knowledge and Practice of Newborn Care Among Mothers in Plateau State Specialist Hospital Jos

Abstract
ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was to assess the knowledge and practice of newborn care among mothers in Plateau State Specialist Hospital Jos. To achieve the purpose of the study, three (3) specific objectives and three (3) corresponding research questions were formulated. Literature pertinent to the study was reviewed under the following subheadings; conceptual framework, theoretical framework, Empirical studies on knowledge and practice of newborn care among mothers and summary of literature reviewed. The descriptive survey research method was adopted for the study. The study comprised of 95 mothers in Plateau State Specialist Hospital at that time of the study. The sample covered 77 mothers. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire. The researcher designed a self-administered questionnaire which consist of four sections of 35 structured questions, the statistical tool used for data analysis was tables, frequency and percentages was used in describing the level of knowledge were utilized for answering the research questions on knowledge of newborn care among mothers. The key findings of the study were, that the mothers studied had a good knowledge and practice of newborn care. The practice of newborn care among mothers was fair. The researcher therefore recommends that awareness creation, health education and seminars on importance of newborn care.
